Nine months after Hurricane Matthew, many families living in the most affected regions are still facing harsh situations due to the damages caused by Matthew. Shelter is one of the priorities: ACTED’s mobilisation continues to provide sustainable shelter solutions to the local populations.

In the first emergency phase, ACTED distributed tarpaulins and fixing kits which enabled the families whose homes were destroyed to build temporary shelters.
ACTED then started to adapt its programmes towards more sustainable shelter interventions, focusing on the reconstruction of permanent shelters in the Sud and Grand’Anse departments.
ACTED shelter teams and beneficiaries are currently working together to support families in the reconstruction of their houses.
In order to ensure the transition between emergency and rehabilitation actions as well as sustainable reconstruction, ACTED trained its staff to the use of earthquake and cyclone-resistant construction techniques.
The structures, corners and rooves are particularly reinforced to mitigate the damage of future weather hazards. In particular, the usage of four-slope rooves enables to split the winds, which will help reducing the risk that rooves are blown away.
