Providing comprehensive Shelter and WASH assistance to flood-affected households in Hudaydah governorate

Heavy flooding affecting Hudaydah governorate

Extreme weather events have plagued Yemen throughout its history, and they are rising in both frequency and intensity due to climate change. In August 2024, exceptionally heavy seasonal rains caused widespread damage and displacement across Yemen, worsening the already dire humanitarian crisis brought on by over ten years of conflict. The governorates of Al Mahweet, Hudaydah, Dhamar, Hajjah, Marib, Sa’ada, Sana’a, Ibb, and Taizz were among the hardest-hit regions. The flooding affected over 31,000 families and 20 districts just in Hudaydah governorate, damaging or destroying hundreds of homes and livelihoods.

Acted’s Rapid Needs Assessment in Hudaydah governorate

Acted conducted a Rapid Needs Assessment (RNA) in October 2024 – utilized a comprehensive door-to-door approach – targeting 200 households across 13 sites in Az-Zuhrah district (Hudaydah governorate). Acted’s Program Team conducted household interviews using OCHA’s standardized RNA form to gather consistent data on socio-economic status, flooding impacts, and immediate needs. Community focal points facilitated access and provided valuable local insights, ensuring the data accurately reflected residents’ experiences and challenges.

Acted’s provision of T-Shelters, NFIs and latrines in Qanamah site

To address the urgent needs of flood-affected households in Az-Zuhrah district, Acted installed 100 T-Shelters benefitting a total of 695 individuals thanks to the funding from the European Union’s (EU) humanitarian support. Acted was able to provide assistance to flood-affected families struggling with inadequate and damaged housing conditions.

My family is from Harad district (Hajjah governorate), but due to the war, we moved to Al Qanamah site (Hudaydah governorate). We used to live in a mud shelter, but it was completely destroyed by the heavy flooding. That shelter was all we had. Acted provided us with a new shelter made of strong, weather-resistant materials. This new shelter has given us a sense of security and comfort. Now, I feel better able to protect my family and our belongings.

Acted also provided us with new NFIs, including blankets and mattresses. This has been a blessing, helping us restore hope and peace of mind.

To complement the installation of T-Shelters, Acted provided 100 households-level latrines, accompanied by facilities for handwashing, reaching a total of 673 individuals. Acted contributed to improve access to sanitation and enhancing privacy to flood-affected families.

Now we have a private place that we can use anytime without feeling uncomfortable and unsafe. This latrine has not only eased our suffering but also provided my family -especially the women - with much-needed privacy. We can now relieve ourselves without fear, and it has significantly improved our sense of psychological comfort.

Acted, is a member of the Yemen Displacement Response (YDR) Consortium. In this YDR project, supported by the EU through its Humanitarian Aid Operations, Acted intervened to support 441 households (3,083 individuals, 1,592 female and 1,491 male) – with T-Shelters, latrines and NFIs – living in Hudaydah governorate, out of which 34 households (272 individuals, 137 female and 135 male) reside in Qanamah site. This intervention provided critical relief and supported community members’ immediate recovery from the devastating floods.

Acted’s intervention has made a significant difference in the lives of beneficiaries, helping them not only recover from the immediate aftermath of the floods but also build a foundation for a more stable and hopeful future”, shares one of Acted’s staff members.
