ACTED and TOTAL executives visited the site of the REPARLE project in Uganda, which is set to deliver renewable energy, agricultural processing and home energy solutions to thousands of households in Northern Uganda.
ACTED and TOTAL visit new operating site for delivering renewable energy to rural homes
A team of senior management from TOTAL and ACTED visited a REPARLE project site in Nwoya, Northern Uganda. REPARLE is a joint venture between ACTED and two Uganda enterprises, DreamShuttle and Mandulis Energy. The project harnesses the power of renewable energy to provide rural farming households with access to value addition for their crops and energy solutions for their homes. The project has received generous support from the TOTAL Access to Energy (TATE) fund as part of TOTAL’s commitment to developing innovative solutions to energy needs. The project offers Ugandan communities access to electricity that is affordable, reliable and sustainable while contributing to the fight against climate change.
The ACTED and TOTAL visitors attended an information session and a tour of the facilities at Pa Min Olango, Nwoya district. The current operations are using renewable energy to power mills for maize and rice. This allows farming households in the area to add value to their crops, thereby increasing the sale price. Following expansion, the project is intended to provide these households with affordable electricity through the installation of a mini-grid. The team also attended a ground-breaking ceremony at Got Ngur, which has been selected as an expansion site for the project.
Lighting the way
Looking forward, the REPARLE team hopes to expand operations to allow more households to increase their income through value addition and to light their homes with renewable energy. ACTED in Uganda is working with over 1,500 farmers to deliver capacity building and marketing support, with the aim of increasing their agricultural income. Mandulis energy is seeking to increase the electricity generation component of the project, in order to allow the team to connect rural households to a microgrid.
