Climate adaption in Chad: Acted, FSE (with the support of the MEPDD), GCF launch the SCALE project to strengthen climate resilience.

Acted and the Green Climate Fund (GCF) have launched the SCALE project (Strengthening Chad’s Adaptation for Land, Ecosystems and smallholders), a major climate adaptation initiative designed to strengthen resilience among vulnerable communities in Chad.

This marks Acted’s first project funded by the GCF and represents a significant step forward in scaling climate adaptation in fragile and climate-affected contexts.

Climate change in Chad: a growing challenge for vulnerable communities

Chad is, by some metrics, the most climate vulnerable country in the world. Increasing temperatures, erratic rainfall, and land degradation are directly impacting agriculture, pastoral systems, and natural resources.

The majority of the population depends on agriculture, pastoralism and other nature-based livelihoods, all of which are severely affected by climate variability and environmental degradation, resulting in heightened livelihood insecurity. A large-scale climate adaptation project supporting over 639,000 people

Through the SCALE project, Acted and its partners aim to support more than 639,000 people across four contiguous provinces the south eastern part of Chad.

The project focuses on practical and scalable solutions to climate change, including:

  • Rangeland management and climate resilient agriculture to support adaptation in primary agricultural and pastoral production systems systems
  • Diversified and climate resilient livelihoods to strengthen economic resilience, with a focus on women and youth

By supporting communities to adapt to climate risks, SCALE contributes to strengthening both short-term coping capacities and long-term resilience.

Strengthening climate governance and national systems

Beyond direct support to communities, the project will contribute to strengthening climate governance in Chad.

SCALE will:

  • strengthen institutional technical capacity to access climate finance
  • pilot and scale up innovative climate adaptation approaches and technologies
  • establish a repository to document and capitalize on best practices. This systemic approach aims to ensure that climate adaptation efforts are sustainable, replicable, and aligned with national priorities.

Advancing Acted’s 3ZERO vision through climate action

The SCALE project directly contributes to Acted’s 3ZERO vision — Zero Exclusion, Zero Carbon, Zero Poverty.

By supporting vulnerable populations to adapt to climate change, restore ecosystems, and develop sustainable livelihoods, the project advances:

  • Zero Exclusion, by prioritising vulnerable communities, including women, youth, and displaced populations
  • Zero Carbon, through ecosystem restoration and sustainable natural resource management
  • Zero Poverty, by strengthening livelihoods and economic resilience

Through initiatives like SCALE, Acted continues to foster inclusive and sustainable ecosystems of actors working together to address climate challenges.

A partnership to scale climate adaptation in the Sahel

The partnership between Acted and the GCF reflects a shared commitment to delivering high-impact climate finance where it is most needed.

By combining community-based approaches with institutional strengthening, SCALE contributes to a broader shift towards scalable climate adaptation solutions in Chad and across the Sahel.

Building resilient futures

As climate risks continue to intensify, strengthening adaptation capacities is key to supporting communities in building sustainable futures.

Through SCALE, Acted reaffirms its commitment to delivering practical, locally grounded and impactful climate solutions, in partnership with communities, institutions, and global actors.
