Ukraine Acted

Reconstructing, renovating and equipping schools to enable the safe resumption of in-person education in Chernihiv oblast

In this 18-month project supported by the Centre de Crise et de Soutien (CDCS) of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, Acted is reconstructing, rehabilitating and renovating conflict-affected schools in Chernihiv oblast, Ukraine.

Located in the north of Ukraine and bordering both Russia and Belarus, communities in Chernihivska oblast suffered substantial infrastructure damage during the first months of the full-scale invasion in 2022.

Restoring educational institutions, improving and ensuring children's access to the educational process in a secure environment is a major contribution to the future of Ukraine. After all, the consciousness of the future citizens of Ukraine begins to form at school. And a person armed with knowledge is invincible. I am proud to be involved in this project.

Maksym Viakhirev, Project Manager at Acted

Access to key services like education remains disrupted due to damaged facilities, limited transportation options and a lack of adequate bomb shelters. Support to the social and economic recovery of education in Chernihivska therefore remains vital to restoring the lives of conflict-affected communities.

Through RestoreEdu, Acted is supporting the resumption of in-person education for school students across Chernihivska, including through:

  • Structural repairs
  • Non-structural repairs
  • Water, sanitation and hygiene rehabilitations
  • Bomb shelter renovations
  • Construction of a new bomb shelter
  • Delivery of IT equipment and other educational supplies such as STEM equipment and classroom furnishings
The installation of a ramp for students with disabilities at Chernihiv School #14

Acted has completed

  • Bomb shelter renovations at 6 schools
  • Non-structural repair works at 6 schools
  • The donation of 33 Wi-Fi routers and 450 laptops to educational institutions
  • The donation of 5 school buses
The construction of a new bomb shelter in Nizhyn School #9, Chernihivska, June 2024

As a result of the project, it is expected that over 30,000 students and teachers will benefit from improved access to educational facilities.
