Integrated nutrition, food assistance and livelihood interventions for climate- and conflict-affected population in Afar and Somali Region
In consortium with Première Urgence Internationale (PUI) and The Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA), and with donor funding from the French Initiative for Food Security and Nutrition (FIFSAN), this 12-month intervention aims to strengthen the food security and livelihoods of 1,095 agro-pastoralists in Afar region, Ethiopia. Using the THRIVE approach, Acted is implementing holistic grazing plans, rainwater harvesting earthworks, and Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) across five target woredas.
Five established Agro-Pastoral Field Schools (APFS) are being supported with new training modules and improved access to veterinary services. As part of the activities, participants are learning improved farming and livelihood practices that support resilient and sustainable agro-pastoral systems. In parallel, the project also supports nature-based solutions for water harvesting through Cash for Work activities focused on primary earthwork construction and land rehabilitation. Through this intervention, project beneficiaries are participating in activities that help communities adapt to climate challenges, restore degraded land, and strengthen food security.
The project is also promoting livelihood diversification and market linkages through tailored technical and business training, provision of essential equipment, and exchange visits for five agricultural cooperatives. These activities contribute to building resilient livelihoods and improving adaptive capacity among agro-pastoral communities in Afar Region.
