Enhancing living conditions of conflict-affected populations in camps in Syria

In Syria, Acted supports camp populations by providing critical site maintenance and improvements through ECHO funding. These efforts include repairing camp infrastructure, maintaining street lighting, or managing the drainage system in camps.

Camps in Syria face significant challenges, including overcrowding and gaps in essential services, particularly for adequate shelter.

Effective coordination and site maintenance services are crucial to enhance camp safety and ensure access to essential needs for all residents.

Through ECHO’s support, Acted is enhancing the living conditions of conflict-affected men, women, boys and girls in camps through high quality CCCM, WASH services and emergency shelter assistance.

This benefits people living in camps such as Tasneem*.

Enhancing the safety, privacy and living conditions for camp residents: Tasneem’s story

Tasneem* is a 54-year-old widow who was displaced to a camp with her three children, including one with special needs, and her eldest daughter, who has two children. When she entered the camp, her family was living in a tent.

We were given a tent, but it did not protect us from the heat of summer and the cold of winter, and my children suffered greatly from that. I tried to save money to build a mud brick shelter two years ago, but due to the rain and my children’s activities, moisture and mud accumulated inside, requiring constant cumbersome maintenance

To enhance the safety and comfort of Tasneem’s family and other camp residents, Acted launched shelter rehabilitation works in the camp in September. These activities were carried out through immediate employment opportunities under Acted’s Cash-for-Work approach.

Thanks to Acted’s support in rehabilitating the shelters, the dust, mud and insects were no longer a concern.  This created a healthier and more pleasant living environment for Tasneem and her family, making their shelter much more comfortable.

After hearing the news about the rehabilitation of shelters, I was overwhelmed with happiness. I felt independent and comfortable knowing that I was now able to live in clean and safe shelter.

While Syria continues to require humanitarian assistance and long-term support to build resilience, Acted’s provision of essential services and employment opportunities aims to meaningfully enhance the safety, dignity, and well-being of vulnerable communities.

Thanks to support from ECHO, Acted is improving living conditions in camps through coordinated site management, WASH services, and emergency shelter interventions.

Tasneem’s story highlights how restoring access to basic needs and improving everyday living conditions can bring renewed hope and a greater sense of stability to those affected by conflict and displacement.
