Half collapsed schools, apartment building riddled with bullet holes, infrastructure scarred by three years of intense armed conflict are a common sight in several neighbourhoods across Benghazi. On 5th of July 2017, the city of Benghazi has been retaken from armed groups after three years conflict. The affected neighbourhoods are now left with widespread damage to infrastructure, buildings and environment. In preparation for the return of inhabitants displaced by the conflict, ACTED team in Benghazi conducted in May and June 2017 a series of workshops and field visits to the post-conflict areas. Local authorities, CSOs working with Internally Displaced Persons and municipalities participated in two workshops to identify the areas of high priority for intervention. Field visits to the priority areas were then conducted. The team, alongside LibAid, sat down with representatives from local councils of each district to discuss priorities in terms of reconstruction and rehabilitation.
ACTED Libya is currently implementing a EuropeAid-funded project to facilitate the return process of IDPs through community stabilization projects in the Great Benghazi area. ACTED will identify and support five stabilization projects led by local CSOs based on the priority areas identified by the workshops and field visits.
