Evghenii and Doina met a few years ago at work and succeeded in building a life together in the town of Anenii Noi in Moldova. They created a warm and welcoming home, enriched by the joy of welcoming their two daughters. However, their lives changed dramatically when Doina fell seriously ill. First, she became completely blind. Six months later, her kidneys failed by 98 percent, and dialysis became the only treatment keeping her alive. Evghenii had to carry the responsibility of supporting the entire family.
We are thankful that, for now, things are stable and have not gotten worse, but everything could change at any moment. No one knows what the future holds.

Evghenii and Doina’s difficult situation was referred to the Acted Protection team by family friends. Evghenii shared with the Acted team that he was used to rely solely on his own strength to care for his family and wife’s treatment, and that he had been unsuccessful in obtaining support in the past. That is why, at first, he was more reserved when speaking with the Acted case workers:
I wasn’t confident, I wasn’t trusting.
Over time, Evghenii managed to build trust and regain confidence as he was not facing his family’s hardship alone.

Alongside his daily care for his wife, Evghenii works hard to support his family and is fully committed to their well-being. Through the European Union-funded project “Promoting durable solutions and self-reliance for refugees and host communities in Moldova through a multi-sectoral humanitarian approach,” Evghenii received financial support from Acted to cover transportation costs for his wife’s dialysis sessions.
The Cash for Protection assistance came at a critical moment when Evghenii’s salary was delayed, and the family’s finances were very tight. This support allowed him to cover fuel costs for a week, ensuring his wife could continue to receive her essential dialysis treatments.
Additionally, Acted’s case management services referred the family to its partner People in Need, as a dedicated actor on child protection in the PLACE Consortium. PIN provided targeted support to one of Evghenii’s daughter, who developed vitiligo, a stress-related condition requiring ongoing medical care.
Thanks to effective coordination and referrals by Acted’s case workers, Evghenii’s family situation was referred to other humanitarian organisations. As a result, the family was able to receive additional support, including food supplies and financial aid to buy firewood for heating.
The PLACE II consortium brings together Acted, People in Need, INTERSOS, the Norwegian Refugee Council and IMPACT Initiatives, working together to support Ukrainian refugees and vulnerable communities in Moldova, like Evghenii and Doina’s family with multi-sectoral humanitarian assistance.
As a result of the Consortium’s support, Evghenii was able to receive both moral and financial assistance during an extremely difficult period for his family.
This coordinated, multi-partner support allowed the family to meet their most urgent needs and use their limited resources on other essential expenses.
Since April 2025, Acted’s Protection Case Management team in Moldova has walked alongside 417 people facing difficult moments. 220 of these journeys have already reached their end with the closure of the cases, while Acted’s caseworkers continue to offer the support, guidance, and care to the remaining families in need, to navigate their protection concerns with dignity.
