Mayotte: Acted sets up its first community canteens closer to isolated populations

Teams from the French NGO Acted, who have been on the island since 20 December, have set up community canteens to meet the immediate needs of the population following the passage of cyclone Chido.

Since Sunday 22 December, three canteens have already been operational, with the capacity to distribute 800 kg of food to almost 300 people.

The priority for Acted teams is to reach the most isolated families and people in hard-to-reach areas with essential foodstuffs such as rice, flour, salt and powdered milk.

As the real needs on the ground far exceed those originally identified, the aim is now to serve 30,000 people as quickly as possible; Acted is in the process of raising the necessary financial support.
