Building a Future Through Farming: Raghda’s Transformation

In Jordan, small-scale farmers often face financial hardship, limited resources, and difficulties accessing markets threatening their livelihoods. This is particularly challenging for Syrian farmers who experience an additional layer of vulnerability related to limited access to land, agricultural resources and stable sources of income

Raghda, a 24-year-old Syrian farmer, experienced these challenges firsthand while managing her small farm alone. To cover basic household needs, she often took on additional work outside the farm, leaving behind her infant daughter.

Seeking stability and an opportunity to grow, Raghda joinedthe Grow Economy project, funded by AFD. Through technical training, business development and financial support, Ragha has strengthened her farms’ operations and expanded her business.

The Grow Economy project launched in 2023 supported over 400 small-scale farmers to improve livelihoods and promote decent working conditions, with a particular focus on women and on the prevention of child labor. Through technical training, business development support, employment services, and agroecological farming practices, the project supports farmers and labourers to increase productivity, diversify income sources, and access more stable, year-round economic opportunities.

Farmers gained better market access through value chain assessments, national bazaars, and post-harvest infrastructure support. The promotion of labourights by sensitising over 3,000 workers and community members on decent working conditions, labour standards, and child safeguarding also fostered a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural sector.

From Individual Effort to Professional Farming

Raghdaused to rely entirely on her own efforts to manage her farm. Despite her determination, limited resources, financial constraints, and a lack of marketing knowledge made it difficult to maintain steady sales or expand her work. Raghda first heard of the project through social media and applied right away. She was thrilled about the opportunity to improve her practical knowledge of agriculture while taking a comprehensive business development approach. The idea of turning her small farm into a sustainable source of income was her long-term vision.

Through the project, Raghda received training in modern agricultural practices and marketing, along with a financial grant that supported her to improve production and expand operations. The sessions introduced her to innovative cultivation techniques, quality standards, and marketing approaches that helped her move from informal, individual work toward a more organiszed and professional business.

Growing Confidence and Expanding Opportunities

Since joining the project, Raghda has expanded her farm, increased productivity, and improved the quality of her crops by applying sustainable agricultural techniques, such as Water saving through drip irrigation, and Upcycling composting. With stronger marketing skills, she has also been able to reach more customers and maintain more stable sales.

Beyond the economic benefits, the experiences also brought significant personal growth. Raghda improved her time-management skills, gained confidence in running her farm, and developed a stronger understanding of modern farming practices and market trends. Most importantly, she built a strong sense of self-confidenceand pride  pride in what she has accomplished in such a short period of time.

Raghda describes her experience as “an invaluable and unforgettable journey,”

Looking ahead, she hopes to  export high-quality products to neighboring countries. She also encourages others to continue seeking opportunities to learn and grow:

Never stop searching for specialised training; it is what transforms individual effort into professional, successful work.
