Burkina Faso

Present in Burkina Faso since 2019, Acted is mobilising to respond to the multidimensional crisis affecting the country through a rapid response covering the immediate needs of displaced populations, supporting the recovery of populations and investing in a more sustainable development. We are working with local authorities and humanitarian actors in the sectors of water, hygiene and sanitation, food security, shelter construction and the management of temporary shelter sites.

Mission context

The humanitarian situation in Burkina Faso drastically worsened during 2019, following an escalation of violence by armed groups in the Sahel. Insecurity has caused more than 1.5 million people to flee across the country (December 2021), particularly in the Boucle du Mouhoun, the North and the East of the country. The Centre-North region has a very high concentration of displaced people, with more than 560,000 displaced persons. In addition, the country is facing the negative consequences of climate change, food insecurity affecting 2.1 million people, chronic poverty and a lack of socio-economic infrastructure.

These forced displacements, concentrated in urban areas and large towns, have strong socio-economic consequences. In addition, they increase the pressure on the economic and social fabric and on the livelihoods of displaced and host communities, reducing the resilience of each.

Acted is present in Burkina Faso since July 2019 through humanitarian actions in the North, Centre-North, Centre and Sahel regions. The organisation works in close collaboration with humanitarian actors and local authorities to provide a multisectoral emergency response to displaced families and vulnerable host communities in the sectors of:

  • Water, Hygiene and Sanitation
  • Food security
  • Shelter construction and and distribution of essential household items
  • Livelihood support
  • Cross-cutting support for protection
  • Governance support in IDP sites through support/strengthening of community systems

The current intervention is part of a larger stabilization program through the strengthening of social cohesion and livelihoods of vulnerable people in line with Acted’s commitment to the Humanitarian-Development Nexus.

3Zero in Burkina Faso

In 2021, Acted, in partnership with its sister organization IMPACT, began the implementation of the AGORA initiative in Burkina Faso. In close partnership with communities and local authorities, AGORA supports the development and implementation of local planning, based on information collected by IMPACT and on Acted’s technical expertise. AGORA has notably been deployed in the city of Fada N’Gourma (East), allowing the creation of a recovery plan now available to local governance and humanitarian actors.
