Since its then groundbreaking pilot work in the Central Asia began in 2018, Acted has built strong regional expertise on women’s empowerment, gender equality and combatting domestic and gender-based violence (GBV). In liaison with civil society and government, Acted is striving to improve the protection of women at-risk and survivors of domestic violence across Central Asia. To do so, Acted empowers civil society to support the effective implementation of legislation, enhances access to comprehensive support services and fosters women’s economic empowerment, while promoting equitable social norms and behaviors. Via a regional platform for key stakeholders, Acted is also promoting peer-to-peer learning and exchange in the region.

Globally, 2 in 3 women report that they or a woman they know have ever experienced
violence. In Central Asia, at least 1 of 3 women experience domestic violence during their lifetime.
Gender-based violence is the most pervasive human rights violation, but it is neither natural, nor inevitable. It can and must be prevented.

The objectif of this project is to amplify the role of civil society in Central Asia (Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan) in addressing gender-based violence in society and promoting the protection and empowerment of women at risk or victims and survivors of violence:

  • By strengthening the capacity of local civil society to advocate for improved legal frameworks on domestic violence & promoting and monitoring their effective implementation
  • By enhancing the capacity of frontline service provider groups, including crisis centers and safe shelters, to provide comprehensive services to violence-affected women and girls
  • By advancing civil society’s actions to promote gender equitable social norms, attitudes and behaviors across the society to prevent gender-based domestic violence
