This 6-month pilot project will seek to promote women’s empowerment via Income Generating Activities specifically targeted to address critical needs in Menstrual Health Management (MHM) in both Kayah and Rakhine State. ACTED will support the creation of a social enterprise/cooperative of 20 women tailors in both areas, who will be trained in the production, marketing, and sale of “Safepads”. 900 women will receive a kit composed of 4 Safepads along with other key MHM items. Underpinning this pilot is an interest to gather both socio-cultural as well as market data to better understand and support the sustainable introduction of locally produced reusable menstrual pads, as both products for private consumption on open markets as well as critical items to be included in humanitarian NFI/dignity kits for vulnerable women in situations of displacement or vulnerability. Throughout the pilot, such groups will receive technical trainings on business development and will actively contribute to the testing and better understanding of market dynamics that would feed into the development of fully sustainable and independent women-led social enterprises upon project scale up.
