Bactria Research and Academic Collaboration – Mapping Mosaics in Dushanbe

Tajikistan Civil society and effective governance
September 2018
August 2019

The six months project ‘Mapping Mosaics in Dushanbe’ is the first project of the new Bactria Cultural Centre’s (BCC) initiative ‘Bactria Research and Academic Collaboration’ (Bactria RAC).
The project will map the Soviet-era mosaics of Dushanbe to offer a new and innovative reading of Tajikistan’s culture and history. The urgency of the project lies in the fact that since their creation in the 1960s-1980s, few mosaics have been maintained (except for a handful, like those at the Children’s Theatre in Dushanbe). Indeed, many mosaics were partially damaged or destroyed during the civil war or due to the rigors of time and weather: the absence of care and attention has compounded their decline. Further, many buildings from the Soviet era have been knocked down, or are slated for demolition, to make way for new developments. Thus, the mapping of mosaics needs to be conducted to help to preserve these precious works of art and links to the past.
