Access to water for agriculture and livelihoods for women in Monaragala District

Sri Lanka Sustainable and inclusive growth
August 2018
February 2021

This two-year project aims to improve the livelihoods of local farmers, especially women, in Monaragala by rehabilitating their access to irrigation water from a water tank. The project will build the capacities of two farmers organizations to implement their mandates and actively engage in local development and governance processes. The objective will be achieved by rehabilitating a water tank and providing water pumps to allow farmers to cultivate a larger plot of land. A demonstration plot will also be set up to promote sustainable agricultural practices. In addition, the project will support female farmers in setting up and running a dry fishing business, which will contribute to their economic empowerment and will enhance their livelihoods. The project will directly benefit 400 households (including 11 female-headed households) and indirectly benefit 1,302 households.
