Women’s vegetable gardens flourish in the dry season

Despite enduring the harsh and otherwise barren dry season in Maban, South Sudan, women living in the Gendrassa and Kaya refugee camps are seeing their vegetable gardens flourish. The innovative perma-garden system is being piloted by ACTED through the support of UNHCR in 2017/18, and has proved to be a great success due to the strong participation and initiative of the local women in growing vegetables year-round to ensure they have a more stable source of food. These colourful vegetable gardens, looked after with great care by the women, are awash with tomatoes, eggplants and various other vegetables, and therefore ACTED and UNHCR hope to expand the initiative in 2018.
