Wheat flour distribution for bakeries in Misrata
In the past days, the situation became critical in the city of Misrata regarding wheat flour stocks, and bread was more and more difficult to find as bakeries were closing and waiting lines getting longer each morning in front of the last bakeries opened.
A breath a fresh air was given to the population with a first shipment of wheat flour arriving to Misrata city on Friday June 17th. On Sunday, 450 metric tons of wheat flour, donated and shipped to Misrata by the World Food Programme, were distributed to 43 bakeries in Misrata, whose stocks were depleted.
Each bakery received 10 metric tons Mt each, enough to ensure bread production for a week. M. Gasan Abbas, the owner of Amlet Tan bakery, located in Qasr Ahmed neighborhood in Misrata, was delighted. He could resume his work. He had to close the bakery 5 days ago due to the lack of wheat flour. The day following the delivery, over 4,500 loaves of bread were produced and sold to 200 families, approximately 1,600 persons.
Thanks to the World Food Programme donation, bread will be available for 8,600 families approximately in the coming week.
