Uganda celebrates 50 years of independence
KAMPALA [ACTED News] – On the 9th October, Uganda celebrated 50 years of independence. This was the occasion for the country to reflect upon its major achievements, acknowledge the challenges it has encountered and also spurred reflection as to what the future may hold. The government made the most of this public celebration to reiterate its commitment to developing the less developed regions such as Acholi and Karamoja, where ACTED is currently mobilised, responding to the needs of the population.
On this day of national celebration, the government also assessed the progress made with regards to the Peace Recovery and Development Plan for Northern Uganda (PRDP), through which, with the support of local and international NGOs, areas such as rebuilding and empowering communities, revitalisation of the economy and peace building and reconciliation as well as consolidation of state authority are addressed with the aim of improving people’s lives in Northern Uganda.
