Supporting domestic food production in Northern Sri Lanka

VAVUNIYA [ACTED News] – According to an assessment conducted by the World Food Programme, 48% of the population of the Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka experience moderate to severe food insecurity. This study raises concerns on the evolution of the situation in Mullaitivu District, where ACTED is currently providing food security and livelihood support: with the scaling down of food assistance, it is likely that food security conditions will deteriorate in the coming months, as it has been observed in other areas. With support from the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Department, ACTED is launching new types of activities in order to tackle this issue: in addition to taking part in cash-for-work activities, 366 returnee households will be supported in creating home gardens that utilize organic methods such as composting and organic fertilizers, so that they may cultivate nutritious leafy vegetables on their own land.
