South Kivu- Shabunda: water sanitation for 11,200 families

Since the 2nd of August, some factions have launched a series of attacks against the localities of North and Center of the Shabunda Territory. Various exactions against the civilian populations such as pillages and arsons of houses have also been reported. These attacks have led to an important displacement of populations. At least 11,200 new households have fled their villages like many others had done so since 2006.

In response to this emergency situation, ACTED, which has been carrying out with the help of the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Department, a water sanitation and food security programs in the Shabunda Territory, has strengthened its awareness raising activities concerning cholera and hygiene in order to confront the apparition of numerous cases of cholera in the host areas for the internally displaced persons caused by the shortages in drinking water. In the coming weeks, ACTED intends to strengthen its water and sanitation involvement by increasing the number of watering-places and by implementing awareness campaigns for the internally displaced populations and natives of the whole area of Shabunda.
