Pakistan - ACTED increases its relief operations and launches a call for donations
Pakistan has been hit by the worst floods in decades with over 14 million affected-people in the country, outnumbering those of the 2004 Tsunami or of this year earthquake in Haiti. ACTED’s teams in Swat and Dir have been fully devoted to responding to this massive emergency for the past 10 days. ACTED is launching a call for donations to support its ongoing relief activities for the flood-affected populations of Pakistan.
ACTED’s ongoing operations
ACTED has completed a large scale needs assessments in Swat, Lower Dir and Upper Dir districts assessing the situation of vulnerable population with regards to housing and displacement, food security, access to drinkable water and basic sanitation, livelihoods, and access to other key basic services.
Benefiting from the presence of an experienced team of 200 staff in both Swat and Dir and a long term in the affected communities ACTED managed to immediately launch emergency activities as early as August 3th 2010 i.e. as soon as floods started to retreat and access to local villages became possible. ACTED focused its first intervention on the provision of drinkable water (1) to affected families, preparation of food deliveries (2) and emergency shelter kit distribution (3).
- Since 6th August, over 47,800 liters of drinkable water have been distributed to affected families in Mingora Teshil (Swat district in Bane, Jel Qadl, Ladakas, Quander, Savade Chaif, Shadra, Ealnd UCs). 3 trucks with 5 water tanks were used for this distribution, which is still going on. Water is delivered both through water-trucking or fixation of 2000 liters water tanks. ACTED will also proceed to the distribution of 50,000 water purification tablets to ensure the potabilisation of water for those who still can’t access clean water.
- After several days, food insecurity is arising as people have lost all their stocks and remain with any food left. ACTED is planning food distributions in the most affected UCs of Swat, Lower and Upper Dir which are expected to start this week. Food ration will be distributed to vulnerable households with no resources, providing for the needs of a whole family for one month: 80 kg of wheat flour, with energy biscuits and food items dedicated for the children. These targeted food distributions will be completed with blanket food distributions in Upper Dir, Lower Dir and Swat districts) in order to reduce food insecurity through a full coverage of the food needs of the whole population of identified communities for one month.60,000 people will thus benefit from these emergency food distributions.
- Since August 3rd, ACTED has been mobilizing its stocks of Non Food Items, preparing to distribute emergency shelter kits, sleeping kits (composed of quilts, blankets and mattress) and other basic hygiene items, etc. Next to these immediate relief operations, ACTED is also preparing to launch CFW activities in Upper Dir and Lower Dir districts, focusing on street cleaning, mud and debris removal in houses.
