The morning departure of ACTED’s staff in Leogane

© ACTED 2010

In the early morning, the ACTED office in Leogane is full of noise with people going back and forth. ACTED’s employees are going in and out between rooms, the different teams are finishing their morning briefing before starting their day’s work on the field, managers give a last hand to the work plan of everyone, with a mix of Creole, French and English, while a few argue on the previous day’s football “champagne or gululu" game, drink a last sip of coffee or finish a full platter of rice and beans. The GPS used to geo-localize the beneficiaries’ needs and our activities are fully charged, the water bottles are filled up for the day and the teams leave one after the other with their working helmets for some and list of beneficiaries for others.

Julien and his colleagues are leaving to supervise cash for work operations. Today, 793 people will work on ACTED’s works throughout the area of Leogane, on road rehabilitation, on cleaning canals and removing rubbles. Beneficiaries work for a period of 20 days and get a salary of 5 USD per day; teams rotate regularly to make sure that as many people as possible can take part to these activities and get some cash for their everyday’s needs. Overall, 172,000 days/men work have been worked so far since March.

Drivers are ready behind the wheel to bring the 150 staffs on all the locations of our activities within a radius of 20 kilometers around ACTED’s office in Leogane. It is 7:30 AM; Salomon, Hervé, Gédéon, Roberson, Silvera, Darley and the other drivers have left. The sun is already high in the sky and a new day has started in Leogane.
