Local communities and ACTED work together to identify local needs

Engaged in subsistence farming or fishing, rural communities in Nias often lack the skills and tools to pull themselves out of a cycle of poverty. ACTED’s livelihoods consolidation programme, which rolled into action last week with Participatory Rural Appraisals (PRA) in 26 villages, aims to increase opportunities for over 5,000 farmer and fishermen families to improve their yields and incomes. The PRA sees every village gather together, with the support of ACTED staff, to identify the gaps and opportunities for local development. It is the first step in honing ACTED’s intervention strategy to the local context and empowering communities to take hold of their own development needs.
