Iraq: New shelters for IDPs

BAGHDAD [ACTED News] - ACTED has completed shelter rehabilitation for 177 displaced families living in squatter settlements in Baghdad. Beneficiaries were provided with shelter materials such as concrete blocks, corrugated metal sheeting and steel bars and then paid through a cash-for-work program to improve the structural integrity of their homes. This shelter rehabilitation is part of a larger program to improve the living conditions of poverty-stricken families still displaced due to the violence which erupted following the conflict in 2003. ACTED also distributed water tanks, plastic sheets and hygiene kits, and conducted hygiene training to 776 IDPs living in these settlements. This project is supported by United Nations Development Programme through the Expanded Response Fund.
