Improving sanitation in South Sudan

WAU [ACTED News] – 5,680 individuals are reported to be displaced in Gogrial West County, Warrap State, due to floods. Many households have lost all their belongings and have seen their houses be destroyed by the rising water levels. ACTED swiftly responded to this emergency by assessing the needs of the populations in Alek and Akon South, areas of Gogrial West, where it has registered 269 displaced households. After confirming water, sanitation and hygiene needs to be the most critical, ACTED distributed buckets, drinking cups, soap and water purification sachets to each of the 269 families. In order to ensure that these goods were effectively used, ACTED ensured that hygiene promotion and awareness raising were part of this initiative. This emergency intervention will ensure that displaced families have safe and clean water to drink in the immediate aftermath of their displacement, and will reduce the prevalence of water-borne diseases, such as diarrhea, among the most susceptible populations, such as children.
