Improving living conditions of squatter populations in Baghdad
Throughout Iraq, around 500,000 Iraqis live in approximately 360 squatter settlements, of which there are at least 116 settlements in Baghdad representing more than 250,000 individuals including vulnerable members of the host community, unregistered IDPs, registered IDPs, returnees or refugees. During 4 months, ACTED will distribute 900 shelter NFI kits comprising plastic sheeting, which beneficiaries can use to insulate doors, windows and or roofing. Water filters, jerry cans and household water tanks will also be distributed. To reduce the risk of water-borne disease outbreak, ACTED will implement camp cleaning and garbage disposal, incentivizing 150 people to work as cleaners in the camps for a period of 20 days. 30 women beneficiaries will be trained as trainers in best hygiene, water treatment and usage and waste disposal practices.
