Haiti: ACTED mobilised to respond to populations’ needs after hurricane Sandy hits
PORT AU PRINCE [ACTED News] - Following the passage of hurricane Sandy in the Caribbean between 24th and 26th October 2012, latest estimates show that 52 people have been killed, 20 have been injured, 20 are missing, and more than 18,000 people have been affected by this storm.
Material damage is also considerable, with up to 15,000 houses damaged or flooded, more than 10,000 homes destroyed and with certain areas reporting a loss of up to 80% of their crops.
The health and food situation is dire. ACTED teams are mobilised to help identify and respond to populations’ immediate needs in the Port-au-Prince, Leogane (West Department), St-Marc (Artibonite Department) and Hinche (Plateau Central Department) areas. Within the framework of an Alliance2015 intervention alongside Italian NGO CESVI, ACTED is also taking part in the emergency response in the South Department.
