First steps toward the Sudanese refugees’ self-sufficiency in the camp of Oure Cassoni
Since 2004, the Sudanese refugees in the camp of Oure Cassoni, located in the heart of the desert in Eastern Chad, have beneficiated from numerous food distributions, on which they still largely depend. To help them reach self-sufficiency, ACTED has implemented Income Generating Activities for the refugee populations of the camp. Since 2007, 375 people (including 267 women), organized in 34 Income Generating Activities groups, are hence helped. Beyond the provided professional training, selling their products generates an income that enables the refugees to diversify their consumption and to develop promising prospects. ACTED’s initiative was recently praised at the produce exhibition on February 25th, as its participants recognized the effectiveness of such a model for the development of the camp.
