First emergency distributions in Sindh

2,4 million liters of potable water for populations in Badin

ACTED has been targeting Akri, in northern Sindh (an area of Faiz Ganj, one of the worst-hit parts of Khairpur District) for NFI kit distributions. Samuel, a member of ACTED’s emergency team describes the situation for the residents of Akri. “The people’s situation is desperate. Water covers most of their farmland and crop losses are huge. In villages all over the area, houses have collapsed and residents live either in the open or in huddled clusters of tents hastily erected on the roadside. Many villages remain inaccessible, and food access is becoming a major concern for residents.”

“Local NGOs have begun distribution of tents, food items, and medical aid, but are overwhelmed by the scale of the problem and have covered only a small portion of the villages affected. Despite ongoing efforts at dewatering, the standing water is subsiding slowly and villagers will not easily be able to reach markets, clinics, and other essential services for some time. ACTED is preparing the distribution of 1,928 NFI kits to the neediest families of the region in the coming days.”

The following items will be distributed:

  • emergency shelter boxes
  • blankets
  • sleeping mats
  • ropes
  • plastic sheets
  • kitchen sets
  • jerry cans
  • hygiene items

In Badin district, ACTED teams have already proceeded to the distribution of Aquatabs – water cleaning tablets. In all, 126,850 Aquatabs have been distributed, which will enable the potabilization of 2.4 million liters of water for 1,056 families for 20 days.
