A film to promote the Millennium Development Goals
One of the short movies of the film ‘8’ on the Millennium Development Goals, ‘Mansion on the Hill’ by Gus Van Sant is linked to ACTED and focuses on child mortality.
Half-way through, it is truly urgent to make the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) real. The film ‘8’ expresses this urgency. 8 renowned directors have decided to shoot a short movie on a respective MDG.
A global issue
In September 2000, 191 governments vowed to reduce world poverty by half before 2015. There are 8 MDGs. The film ‘8’ develops on these crucial goals and this pressing agenda, with the participation of 8 famous directors and 8 important French NGOs.
An innovative initiative
In order to sensitize the crowds to this crucial issue, each director chose a Goal as a topic for his short-movie. The directors notably include Wim Wenders, Jane Campion and Gael Garcia Bernal. Each movie is associated to a French NGO. ACTED is linked to the movie shot by Gus Van Sant, director of Elephant and Harvey Milk, and whose short-movie focuses on child mortality.
ACTED’s action to reduce child mortality in Chad
Supporting the crisis-affected populations in Darfur since 2004, ACTED intervenes in the refugee camp of Oure Cassoni in the North-East of Chad, next to the Sudanese border. Our teams are involved to respond to the basic needs of these vulnerable populations and to build their food autonomy, while limiting the environmental impact of their present in this hostile context.
Since 2006, we guarantee the treatment of under-nourished children for the refugees and the local population in the framework of 4 nutritional centres spread across the camp, as well as in neighbouring Bahai. Malnutrition is not solely linked to a nutritional deficit but is greatly induced by infections and diseases due to the geographical situation as well by the changing diet and cooking practices of the refugee populations. Today, malnutrition affects almost 12% of the children in the camp of Oure Cassoni.
These ACTED-managed health structures treat the most urgent cases of malnutrition until a return to appetite is noticed. In addition to the dispensation of medical treatments, the teams take care of the mothers by informing and advising them to promote the good nutritional practices of their children.
