Ebola: Preventing the spread of the virus in the Ivory Coast

[ACTED News] - The Ebola virus has already spread to six countries in Western Africa (Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Senegal, Mali), causing the deaths of almost 7000 people since the first case in March 2014. The Ivory Coast shares a border with Liberia – the country the most affected by the virus – and is preparing for a possible expansion of the virus.

Informing people about the virus and on best practice to limit its transmission and improving access to hygiene, are crucial steps towards stopping the virus. In Abidjan, ACTED teams are participating in the setting up of a dynamic information system for the population of the capital, with the support of EuropeAid. Information hotspots and mobile teams will allow for 250,000 people to be sensitized on the virus, targeting public spaces such as markets and train stations. In parallel, water points will also be rehabilitated to make sure people can was and disinfect their hands regularly. People will be better prepared to protect themselves against the illness and to react should the virus spread to their country.
