Displacement soars across Somalia

NAIROBI [ACTED News] - UNHCR’s latest Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) figures for July 2012 indicate the total estimated IDP population in Somalia to be 1.36 million, of which approximately 241,000 Somalis are reported to have been displaced between May and July 2012. The Internal Displacement Monitoring Center notes this is due mainly to continuing conflict, not resource shortages. Increased population movements through the Afgooye corridor, as a result of fleeing violence, have significantly contributed to these figures. The country faces outbreaks of cholera, and diarrhea; mostly in the IDP hosting areas in the south. IDPs therefore need to be made a priority for assistance and aid.
