ACTED responds to ongoing Somali food crisis

NAIROBI [ACTED News] – Over the past 10 months, ACTED has delivered food to 8,100 extremely vulnerable households (representing approximately 48,600 individuals) in South Central Somalia. This action comes in response to the serious food shortages faced by more than 2 million individuals in the country, as reported by Oxfam in October 2012. Food was distributed to beneficiaries engaged in Food for Work activities, or received as unconditional food transfers for extremely vulnerable families. The recent distribution has been vital in assisting both agro-pastoral and riverine households to access food during the major agricultural hunger season (April-June). All households receiving food were classified as at either ‘Crisis’ or ‘Emergency’ levels of food insecurity, in need of immediate food assistance to prevent them slipping further into a crisis situation.
