UGANDA: PPR vaccination in North Pokot

ACTED UGANDA - PPR vaccination in North Pokot (Kenya)

Peste des Petits ruminants (PPR), or “goat plague”, is a severe, fast-spreading disease of domestic small ruminants. Since August 2007, an outbreak of PPR has been reported in Pokot, Turkana and Karamoja regions of Kenya and Uganda respectively. ACTED’s general objective in this project is to contribute to improved shoat (sheeps and goats) health and survival in North and West Pokot districts of Kenya, and ultimately improve pastoralists’ livelihoods through increased food security and income. During this 3 month project, 200,000 shoats will be vaccinated against PPR in North Pokot and 300,000 in West Pokot Districts of Kenya. ACTED will also conduct an awareness raising campaign through workshops, as well as will organise one public discussion, design and publish PPR leaflets, hold coordination meetings, and sensitize livestock owners about PPR at field level. 71,000 people in North Pokot and 85,000 in West Pokot whose livelihoods directly depend on animal husbandry will benefit directly from this project.
