The rural Zalingei areas close to Abata and Treij in West Darfur will be the set of a new ACTED’s water and sanitation programme and livelihood support. The project is to last 7 months and a half and will benefit directly to 19,220 people. The programme is meant to tackle poor humanitarian conditions that are getting worse due to deficient management of water resources. ACTED will intervene in collaboration with the local authorities in 9 villages by constructing 12 wells and rehabilitating 6 hand pumps as well as by promoting emergency hygiene activities to make the return of IDP sustainable.

The 10 month project will be launched in the North of Lebanon in the Nahr el Bared Palestinian refugee camp and in the adjacent areas in order to provide the necessary assistance and relief. The project will involve 1,800 vulnerable IDPs, about 300 households, and will facilitate the relocation of beneficiaries to new house units (150), the selection of building to be reconstructed and 150 emergency repairs needed for damaged houses.

ACTED launched, in April 2008, a new 6 month project aiming at three major areas: water provision in schools and communities, hygiene promotion and sanitation in schools. The project will directly benefit to more than 8,000 people of whom more than 2,500 will be school children. The activities will include the construction of 25 deep tube wells, the rehabilitation of 54 communal open wells water provision, the improved access to sanitation in schools (construction of 97 latrines), the maintenance of the sanitation infrastructure, as well as the set up of activities of hygiene promotion, among others.

The 12 month project will aim at the stabilisation of the post-conflict situation in Mwenga and Walungu territories, South Kivu Province, and in Moba territory, province of Katanga. The project objective is the rehabilitation of some crucial zones in several road axes which are essential to humanitarian access, the return of refugees in their villages, the revival of socio-economic activities and security improvement. The activities will benefit directly the reintegration of more than 109,000 people thanks to shelter reconstruction as well as the construction of 23 wells, 4 schools and 4 health centres.

The 12 month project aims at improving the living conditions of the Sudanese refugees without creating cleavages with the local population whose living conditions are very poor and instable. 28,092 refugees and 15,000 Chadian local people living near the refugee camp will benefit from the programme. The activities aim at meeting all beneficiaries’ primary needs, i.e. the distribution of food and non food items, the development of environmental protection and improving activities. The project aims also at strengthening food self-sufficiency thanks to the following activities: the rehabilitation of regular food and non food items distribution centres as well as fuel distribution, nutrition awareness campaigns, tree planting (13,000) and training sessions about agro economic good practises as well as a vaccination campaign and veterinary material supply.
