CAR: Improving the living conditions of vulnerable people in the Nana-Gribizi region through road rehabilitation
Donor: WFP
Project code: 26 ZU 2W
In coordination with the on-going road rehabilitation project in the Nana-Grebizi region of northern CAR, supported by the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Department, ACTED has received the support of WFP to provide warm lunches for project workers throughout the duration of the rehabilitation work. Through the Food for Work approach, WFP distributes rations of beans, corn starch, oil and salt, allowing meals to be prepared for the work teams recruited from villages along the roadway. This meal provides the balanced caloric intake necessary to meet the demands of diffi cult road rehabilitation work.

The fi rst of the 3R projects consists of the rehabilitation of Grand Saline’s principal road, a 29 kilometre long project including activities such as cash for work. While the road is currently in terrible condition and unusable for more than half the year, once repaired it will allow for a better production flow in the short-term and improve Grand Salinians’ access to basic services (the town of Grand Saline, capital of the commune, is isolated because of the lack of a main roadway). ACTED Haiti’s second project is entitled, “Construction of an irrigation canal towards the “The Desert” zone in the northeast of Grand Saline Commune.” The project includes construction of the remaining portion of the main irrigation channel running parallel to the road, which stimulates production in the potentially rich “Desert” zone thanks to the Cash for Work (CFW) activities and irrigation. In turn, the roadway will allow for the increased movement of goods from this newly irrigated area. The project will not only benefit CFW workers, (approximately 724 for the roadwork project and 480 for the channel construction), but also more than 15,000 people that live in the commune itself. Furthermore, the NGOs on the ground will benefit from the increased access to vulnerable communities in the previously isolated region, and be able to better come to their assistance in the event of a disaster.
